On 2nd July 2006, Wortley Rotary Club held its 10th Annual Vintage Vehicle Rally at Wortley Hall, near Sheffield. Glorious weather abounded again, with only a hint of a shower early morning but not enough to wet the ground; unlike Sheffield, apparently, (only half a dozen miles away) where there was a torrential downpour for nearly 2 hours. Over 150 cars, commercials, military vehicles and motorcycles were on display. To complement the World War II theme, there was a fantastic 20 minute aerial display by 2 Tiger Moths which flew in from Elvington near York and refuelled at Netherthorpe near Chesterfield before flying home. Other events included a birds of prey display, makeup displays and makeovers courtesy of Clarins (Boots Meadowhall), sidestalls, craft stalls and children’s entertainment.
Star of the show this year turned out to be an unexpected visitor – a vintage steam roller which arrived unannounced at around 2.00 p.m., much to the consternation of the Wortley Rotarians. No provision had been made for it and we had not sought the permission of Wortley Hall to bring such a large vehicle onto the site. Nevertheless, after the initial “What shall we do?” and “Where shall we park it?” and the inevitable “He can park where he likes!”, the steam roller came to a stop in the most prominent place in front of the Hall and proved an instant attraction to both children and adults alike. The event raised an estimated £4,500 for Weston Park Hospital and other local charities. This event has become firmly fixed in Wortley’s events calendar and the 11th Vintage Vehicle Rally will be held at Wortley Hall on 15th July 2007. |
