The opening

On Friday, 12th June Hull Kingston Rovers and Rugby League Legend, Roger Millward MBE officially opened The Rotary Youth Centre at Craven Park - a project that demonstrates the true value of partnership - Hull KR donated the area under the East stand in which the centre is located whilst Rotary donated £115,000 from the RIBI Flood Relief Fund.  The Hull KR Education and Sport Trust will be responsible for the day to day operations now that the centre is open.

Rotary's flood relief fund was set up as a direct response to the June 2007 floods which devastated many areas of District 1270.  To date over £640,866 was given to projects within the District.  The donation towards this project is the largest single payment granted by the Committee.

Allan Jagger who was RIBI President at the time of the floods visited Hull to meet with key individuals and what help was needed.  Allan states “I witnessed at first hand the devastation caused by the extensive flooding in June 2007.  Rotarians were quick to assist the emergency service in helping those affected.  Since then over £1.25 million has been raised by Rotary, every penny spent in establishing sustainable projects for communities here in Yorkshire and around the UK.

“Rotary is a service based organisation of men and women volunteers dedicated to helping others.  WeCycling for that healthy drink are delighted to be in partnerships with organisation like the Hull Kingston Rovers Education & Sports Trust who support the young people of Hull providing an opportunity to broaden their horizons through sport.

The Centre will provide an informal, fun, enthusiastic environment in which to engage with young people and their families.   Hull KR Chair, Neil Hudgell said “we are delighted to be working in partnership with Rotary to provide these much needed facilities.  Rotary’s input and involvement is invaluable in helping to tackle local issues through the provision of this youth facility”

The activities provided will be from sport to ICT, construction to sexual awareness as well as basic life skills such as cooking and career advice.   Through these activities young people and their families will be able to develop confidence to tackle some of the prominent socio-economic issues that directly affect them and their future ie: improving educational attainment and skills levels thereby improving employment opportunities and increasing emotional well being as a means of reducing crime/harm.

Hull KR Education & Sport Trust Chair, Mark Broadbent “This will provide facilities to enable the trust to reach to so many more young people enabling us to expand on the good work we already do within the community.  It’s brilliant that we were successful in obtaining this funding working in partnership with Rotary”

Guests to the event were invited to part-take in healthy lifestyle activities and drinks as well as watching the mini-mods rugby tournament.
