On Friday, 12th June Hull Kingston Rovers and Rugby League Legend, Roger Millward MBE will officially open The Rotary Youth Centre at Craven Park. The opening of the centre demonstrates the power of true partnerships - Hull KR donated an area under the east stand, £115,000 was secured from the RIBI (Rotary in Great Britain and Ireleand) Flood Relief Fund and the Hull Kingston Rovers Sports and Education Trust will be responsible for the future operational management of the youth centre. Roger, who believes that rugby clubs should contribute to their local communities states “we are delighted that our connections with our local Rotary Clubs has helped to provide this new facility for our young people - the rugby club is part of the community and the community is part of the rugby club. Without the Rotary support we would not have this fantastic new facility" Rotary's flood relief fund was set up as a direct response to the June 2007 floods which devastated many areas of District 1270. To date over £620,866 was given to projects within the District. The donation towards this project is the largest single payment granted by the Committee. RIBI President, Ian Thomson agrees “This is a wonderful project and testament to Rotary’s commitment to promoting the opportunities of young people.
“Rotary members worldwide are totally committed to the support of young people. It would be simplistic to say that ‘they are our future’ but without them we do not have a future. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders and we feel it is so important to invest our time in their development. If you stop believing in young people, how can we expect them to believe in themselves? “The floods were devastating for many, many people, but we should be proud of how our communities pulled together to support each other in troubled times. Rotary was founded on these principles of camaraderie and it is heart warming to know that community spirit is still alive and well.” |
