RC Humberside preparing gardens at St Andrew's Primary PDF Print E-mail

Manure spreadingChildren at St Andrews Primary School in Kirk Ella have got a boost to ensure their school gardens produce a healthy crop of vegetables this year.

Members of the Rotary Club of Humberside have delivered three tons of farmyard manure and spread it over the school's three garden plots.

For some time now the school has encouraged the youngsters to develop an interest in the gardens.  A few months ago the Rotary Club arranged for some stone slabs to be delivered to the school to pave the paths between the plots.

A group of Club members turned up at the school with wheelbarrows to unload the manure and spread it on the gardens.

Rotarian George Tarbotton who was in charge of the project said "For some time now we have tried to encourage the youngsters to develop an interest in the gardens. Ensuring they are in tip top condition is just one of the ways we help. The Team

"It is more important than ever these days that children develop gardening skills from an early age and from the crops they grow it is quite clear our efforts are playing their part along with the encouragement they are given in the school".

There is an incentive for the children to play their part - later in the year the Club will award a £25 prize to the pupil who shows he or she is the keenest gardener in the school.
