Jason and AndrewGREETINGS and good wishes from Market Rasen Rotary Club will be carried half way around the world when Rasen Mail editor Jason Hippisley becomes ‘Our Man in Manila’ from this week.
Departing from Humberside Airport tomorrow morning, Thursday, Jason and four others are engaged in the Rotary International Group Study Exchange between this region and part of the Philippines.
During the month-long project they will each experience aspects of their own work in Philippine situations - Jason hoping to report for national and local newspapers and radio stations over there and also sending back regular reports for BBC Radio Lincolnshire, the Rasen Mail and www.marketrasenmail.co.uk - and also discover aspects of Filipino culture, heritage and social conditions. One aspect of interest will be the way Philippine media handles earthquakes, of which there are 20 each year, compared to the novelty caused when Market Rasen was at the centre of a media storm for last year’s quake which was Britain’s largest in 25 years.
“I’m also very interested to see how news outlets in relatively rural areas like ours operate and the emphasis given to online news, websites and forums in those places,” he said.
Over the course of 32 days each team member will be hosted by ten different families and, as a group, by 40 different Rotary Clubs in District 3820, giving presentations to each one and also speaking at the District Conference to explain more about their sponsor Rotary District 1270 over here, which takes in Brigg, Market Rasen, Louth, Lincoln and Horncastle clubs and stretches up to Hornsea and across to Barnsley.
Market Rasen Rotary president Andrew Dalrymple gave Jason pendant banners to take to the host clubs. His colleagues on the trip Rachel Shaw, Tammy Goddard, Joanna Spink and co-ordinatoir John Gosnold also have banners from their sponsor clubs.
“We send out greetings to the clubs you attend and our good wishes and look forward to receiving theirs in return when you come back to tell us about your experiences,” he said.
On the return flight a party of Group Study Exchange delegates from the Philippines will come to this area for a month.
Rotary promotes the opportunity to professionals aged 25 to 40 to travel to a designated region of the world and develop their vocational and cultural understanding. It is open to anyone without direct association to Rotary and next year delegates from this area will be visiting Romania and Moldova. Interested? Call Malcolm Miller on 01522 790367.
