Doncaster and Doncaster St Leger Clubs combined their resources to set up and man a Christmas Grotto for Santa at Sainsbury's supermarket at Edenthorpe, Doncaster in the run up to Christmas. With the help of the manager and his staff, Rotarians, wives, partners and friends had a prime pitch at the entrance to the store for five consecutive days in what is the store's busiest sales period. Appropriately dress in red suit, bearded and armed with tins of toffees, Santa met old and yong alike with a cherry "ho, ho, ho" and a wave, whilst his atendants held our collecting boxes in anticipation of a cash donation. They were not disappointed, as customers donated £20 notes and everything down to 1p coins and others of unknown country of origin in their eagerness to help theworthwhile charities. Altogether £3,853 was colected, which will be divided equally between NSPCC, Barnardos and Bluebell Wood. It is intended to present cheques to teh three charities at a combined meeting of the two clubs in February.
