President Gareth Rowland presided when The Rotary Club of Alford and Mablethorpe celebrated its 30th Charter Anniversary at The Grange and Links Hotel, Sandilands on 6th June: the principle guest was Allan Jaggar, President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. Many will know that the late Bill Huntley MBE chartered the club when he was District Governor of the previous District 122 in 1978 and almost ten years later to the day he joined the club; he was often heard on his travels to say that he had personally chartered it for his own retirement. The Charter was timed to celebrate the presentation of the Charter, again by Bill, on 2nd June 1978. On that occasion the "Welcome to Rotary" was by the then President of RIBI, Nevil Tweedle of the Stockport Club.
Given the significance of Alford and Mablethorpe Club efforts to complete the Bill Huntley Endowment in support of World Peace Scholars it was appropriate that current RIBI President Allan, a tireless supporter of the appeal, was present and the "Bill Huntley Hat" passed on the night raised £527 for the appeal. At the end of the evening Allan was presented with a rare, glass "Be a Friend" paperweight, originating from Bill’s year of RI Presidential office in 1994/1995. The Mayors of both Alford and Mablethorpe were joined by District 1270 Governor John together with Past RIBI President John Hockin, District Governor Nominee Mohammad and a clutch of Past District Governors and a healthy contingent from our "Mother Club" Skegness I can officially report that a great night was had by all!! |
