On lucky Friday 13th June 16 riders, including 6 Rotarians from Epworth & Isle of Axholme, 1 Rotarian from Hull Paragon and 9 other cyclists, along with 2 lady Rotarians as the back up team loaded themselves and their bikes onto a mini-bus and made the journey to Whitehaven where they began the first leg of the Coast to Coast cycle ride in aid of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in Doncaster. What had seemed like a good idea after a few Pimms in the garden in the summer of 2007, was now a reality. Training had been regular and rigorous, thanks to Paul (the Killer) Seaman’s supervision and the team were able (if not necessarily ready) for the start. 38 miles later and the first stint was done, with only 2 minor casualties and a lot of midge bites.
The second day took the group through some stunning scenery but treacherous ground to Penrith, again with only a couple of minor tumbles but the promise of a good meal pulling them onwards. The clothes were only slightly delayed as the support team found shopping overly tempting and evenings were spent in friendly and comfortable accommodation, with hearty food and good conversation (to say nothing of the exercise, copious amounts of fresh air and a few beers) speeding everyone on their way to bed. Day 3 saw the group climb to a staggering 1903ft with the prospect of two further hills after that. The group went from sea level to 2000 ft at least 3 times that day and sometimes the hills were as steep as 1 in 6, but it was obvious that the gruelling training schedule was paying off as they reached County Durham by 2.30 with over 100 miles of the journey behind them. By day 4 coughs and colds were starting to emerge and the group was looking forward to achieving their objective and head for home, but after a difficult first mile or so they took relief in an easier 40-odd mile ride down to the east coat and dipping their wheels in the sea, secure in the knowledge that over £3500 had been raised by the Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotarians and then it was straight on the bus and back to Epworth to a champagne reception! The scenery had been magnificent, the hills a challenge and the fellowship fantastic, so the only question which now remains is…..what’s the next challenge ???
