District 1270 quickly responded to the recent disasters in both Burma and China in raising funds for much needed shelterboxes for both these countries.
The target of 10 shelterboxes has been exceeded significantly. District 1270 have donated 17 boxes at a cost of £9,500 Thank you to all the clubs who have supported this humanitarian project when it has been most needed. Update from Shelterbox follows:
As at 22 June: May was a £1.2 million month, some time since that was achieved!!! Now for the latest information Myanmar 2194 boxes distributed + 378 tents = shelter for about 25,000 China, 800 boxes distributed + 3630 tents = shelter for about 44,300 people. Also personnel is on the ground in both locations who continue distributing and gathering information. We now estimate that since 2004 shelter has been provided for 500,000 people in 46 countries a total of 42,500 boxes has been sent as aid, including boxes. Paid for with funds from: UK * USA * AUSTRALIA * CANADA * GERMANY * DANMARK * SOUTH EAST ASIA * NORWAY * NEW ZEALAND* LUXEMBURG MAJOR EMERGENCIES: The number of people estimated to have been helped by shelterbox includes:- 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami 227,000 2005 Hurricane Katrina 13,200 2005 Kashmir Earthquake 138,000 2006 Java quake & tsunami 16,000 2007 Floods Pakistan & Nepal 19,150 2008 Cyclone Nagris Myanmar 23,720 2008 China Earthquake 23,800 Ongoing Aid To Africa 52,000 COST:- Each box costs £490 – including all materials, packing, storage and Distribution to individual recipients worldwide. Based on six months use this equates to 25 pence per person per day |
