Despite a "no show" at the last minute of scheduled guest speaker Graham Poll ( recently retired UEFA & Premier League Referee) the RC of Scunthorpe Pentagon held a very successful Sportsman's Dinner on Friday 5th October at the Wortley House Hotel Scunthorpe.
With the Hull Freedom Trail Vehicle making an impressive site at the entrance to the event, the 150 guests were admirably entertained by late replacement speaker Paul Fletcher MBE. Paul played football for Burnley FC in the"old Division 1" in the 1970's before being ruled out of playing thro injury. During his time as MD at Huddersfield Town FC he was the driving force in the new MacAlpine Stadium, leaving them he was involved in the new Wembley Stadium project.
He is now MD at Coventry City FC and was awarded the MBE in 2006 for services to football & charity. His stories covered all the years between 1970 & present day & he kept the guests well entertained. At the start of the evening President Colin Wells presented equipment to Trevor Cherry from the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Pentagon had raised £7000 for this worthy cause thro' their annual golf day in June & a May Ball in a large marquee at Glanford Park - home of Scunthorpe United. The money will be used to buy a laptop computer, a projector, other advertising equipment and also to revamp the pilots mess at RAF Waddington where the copter is based. The Sportsman's evening raised approx £1800 - all of which will go to Rotary Supported Charities. |
