Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club Wednesday July 25 th 2007 saw a very interested group of Army Cadets, their parents and Guests and members of Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club gather at Epworth Youth Centre for the first ever presentation of “The Best Cadet of the Year”.
As it turned out there were two best cadets as Army Personnel could not choose between Matthew Walsh and Laura Ballantyne and it was agreed both should hold the trophy for six months. The Epworth and Isle of Axholme Army Cadets was Past President Tricia Murphy’s chosen project last year and it was particularly fitting that after helping to raise funds to establish this group in December 2006 that the Best Cadet Trophy was presented by Tricia’s Mum Muriel Jacklin in memory of her late father Frank Jacklin. Individual trophies were given to both successful cadets along with other presentations to some of the 25 cadets and a lovely buffet was provided for over 75 guests and will hopefully become an annual event.Guests were treated to two Presentations by both Epworth and Ashby detachments and then a very interesting talk about being a tailor in the Coldstream Guards was given by visiting Officers. This particular project is ongoing with The Youth Activities Committee of the Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club and it is hoped to raise enough funds to purchase a standard for the Cadets ready for the Armistace Day Parade on Sunday 11th November.
