On Sunday 8th October Rotarians and spouses gathered at the home of Peter and Kate Harrison in Brough for the 2006 Conkerfest. This year’s contest was organised by last year’s winners, South Cave and Wolds Club. On arrival we discovered that one of the Clubs had dropped out at the last moment, and we were swiftly and efficiently re-organised into three teams under the captaincy of Winston Pannett. Each club fielded two male teams and one mixed team. We equipped ourselves from a large box of ready-strung conkers and then set forth into battle.
Conkers were soon swinging and points were gained as cracks appeared in them. The excitement of the crowd was at fever pitch as the tournament proceeded round by round. Barrie Salt kept a careful check on our points score as the Humberside Club entered the final round neck and neck with South Cave & Wolds. Then in their last round Humberside ‘C’ team took the lion’s share of the points. We waited with bated breath as Barrie and the other scorers conferred, and then the announcement was made. Humberside had won by one point! We celebrated over a feast of pies and peas washed down by a plentiful supply of liquid refreshment.South Cave & Wolds Club hosted the event excellently and showed great generosity of spirit in their narrow defeat.Congratulations to all involved in a most entertaining afternoon. The Humberside Club have a lot to live up to next year, when it will be their turn to host the event!
