The newly formed Doncaster Rotaract Club meets at the Salutation Hotel, in South Parade, Doncaster. The group has already had two very lively evenings based at the Salutation on 30th April and 14th May. Additionally, a group of eight of the members spent an enjoyable, fun evening bowling with members of the Scunthorpe Club. Ken Waight (Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s) and Angela Hartley (Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger) with tremendous support and advice from Rob Davison (District Rotaract Chairman) met on several occasions before 30th April. They have attended the first two Rotaract meetings and remain available to support the new members. The initial committee was formed at the 14th May meeting and many ideas for social events were discussed and are being organised. Meetings are now planned for the first and third Monday evenings in each month with the next meeting of the new club, again at the Salutation, on Monday 4th June – 7.30 for 8.00pm. The last time I attended the National Final of the Youth Speaks Competition, which was held in Warwick in April, 2003, Hornsea School had won and their main speaker, Jonathan Hardman, is now President of the Glasgow University Students Union.
This year, Hull Collegiate, or Tranby to you and me, had won the Yeadon Trophy in the senior competition at Hull University and, in winning the regional final at Nottingham, had earned the right to a place in the National Final in Loughborough. |

60's revisited in deepest East Yorkshire |
Sunday, 15 April 2007 |
It was just as if the tardis had landed in deepest East Yorkshire one Saturday in April when Rotarians and their partners met for dinner.
The 1960's theme produced some stunning attire from mini-skirts, boots and vidal sasson hairstyles to flower power hippies and a large number of men in large very dark sunglasses! Music from the Beatles and the Beachboys greeted guests whilst the host served Babycham in vintage glasses to the ladies. Dinner commenced with Prawn Cocktail, followed by Coq au Vin and Blackforest Gateau and finished with cheese and biscuits all cooked and served by the President's and Secretary's wives. The evening concluded with a 60's quiz, which proved to be a source of pleasant memories for some and something akin to Brain of Britain to those who were not born or were far too young to remember anything. All guests paid the full going rate for the dining out with entertainment which was a tremendous success - all proceeds raised going to the Presidents Charity, Cancer Research. Do you recognise any of the guests? |
