Message from Shelterbox -
Remote villages in western Pakistan, in areas bordering Afghanistan have been devastated. Many affected villages are above 10,000ft altitude with sub zero temperatures already - and winter is soon closing in. Without adequate shelter many villagers - particularly the young and elderly are extremely vulnerable and may not survive. ShelterBox is one of few aid organizations in the area and the only one providing desperately needed "winterized tents" which are essential to survival. ShelterBox response team members have been required to operate accompanied by security personnel to get essential aid to disaster victims. Due to security concerns in the region and the remoteness - many aid agencies have stayed away making the delivery of ShelterBox aid vital if further casualties are to be avoided. Donations are urgently needed to enable additional tents and Shelterboxes to be sent to the region. THE Rotary Club of Horncastle’s Fair Hampers scheme is gearing up for its third Christmas bringing festive cheer while helping to fight poverty through trade.
From small beginnings around the immediate area of Horncastle in the heart of Lincolnshire, thanks to its website at www.fairhampers.co.uk the scheme has gone nationwide with orders going as far afield as the Channel Islands. With the help of a local courier, they can be delivered anywhere in the UK. Organiser Rtn Margaret Sergeant explained: “Fair Hampers has really caught people’s imagination because everybody benefits. Hampers are the perfect gift and because both baskets and contents are fairly traded craft workers and farmers in developing countries are receiving a fair deal.” As well as making great presents for family and friends, hampers can also be tailor-made to the requirements of businesses seeking corporate gifts and are available all year round. The sale of hampers and baskets filled with fairly traded goods has raised more than £1000 for national and international charities supported by Rotary in the first two years of operation. |

The pupils from Thorpe Park returned to their own school many months after the floods of June 2007. Thanks to the 8 Hull and East Riding Rotary Clubs (Beverley, Hornsea & East Riding, Holderness, Hull, Hull Kingston, Hull Paragon, Humberside, South Cave & Wolds) who applied for monies from Rotary's national flood funds the school has been able to replace much needed books and computer equipment.
The picture shows pupils and Rotarians absorbed in reading from the books received and working on the computers. Rotary District 1270, on behalf of all the beneficiaries of the national flood funds are very grateful for the support that Naomi Campbell gave to the fundraising. She was so moved by the plight of those affected by the floods that she organised an all celebrity fashion show.
