On Saturday, 24th January, John Prescott MP officially launched a project to create a Youth Centre at Craven Park, the home of Hull KR.
Through District 1270's Flood Relief Task Force, the 8 Rotary Clubs of Hull and East Riding have successfully secured £115,000 from the RIBI (Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland) flood funds to create the Youth Centre. The bid was submitted in partnership with Hull KR who have donated the area under the stand and The Hull KR Education and Sports Trust who will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the centre. In giving his support to the project, John Prescott MP stated “I am extremely pleased that the Rotary Clubs of Hull & East Riding have chosen to make this generous contribution to build a youth club under the East stand at Craven Park. This is a fantastic example of how Rovers, the Rotary and the community are coming together to help the young people of Hull.” |

Following the disastrous floods of 2007, the Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger secured an initial £7,500 to create a new play area at the flood damaged Toll Bar Primary School and then a further £25,000 from Flood Relief funds to replace the ruined ‘green greenhouse’, allotment and other growing areas with an environmental garden.
The project, reflecting the wishes of the children and staff, will provide a substantial area at the school with green spaces, including plots for cultivation, wildlife bog area, ‘stone circle’, living willow arbour, a stage and seating area, a story time corner, bamboo walk etc.,The construction work is almost complete and planting will start in February. The President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland, Ian Thomson, together with the District Governor, Mohammad Ali came to view progress on 14th January and were shown around by the children accompanied by the Head, Jill Northwood, Chair of Governors, John Robinson, and Deputy, Sue Clarke. The visiting VIPs even found time to join in a ‘healthy exercise session’. |

Saturday: I joined the other members of the team in Manchester with a possible concern that our hotel in Delhi, for the immunisation period might not be up to standard. We will see. The entertainment system on the Emirates flight was first class and the journey passed quickly before a four hour stopover in Dubai, which was in the main a vast shopping complex. The onward journey to Delhi was fine but a medical emergency a few rows in front of us delayed our disembarking. Unfortunately, one of our cases was missing and it had to be the one with the medical supplies. We eventually arrived at the Comfort Inn, which is situated in a very poor area and we saw monkeys/cows and elephants, which would feature throughout the trip. The room is fine and after a meal we went on a bus tour around Delhi and came face to face with the horrendous traffic. We saw lots of beggars but masses of history and after dinner at the hotel it was bed. Monday: Woke up at 7:00 a.m. and my window looked out onto the middle ages. Cows stroll past and people are performing the most basic human functions from positions by the road, but all seem happy and content. Our bus arrives on time and we set off for Jaipur. Clearly there are no rules of the road and we see the usual array of animals with camels and goats now regularly observed. Entering, Jaipur we spend so much time avoiding cows in the road, which have no road sense. We discover that a member of the party, a PDG say no more: has left his passport/Travellers Cheques/ Cash/Credit cards in his hotel safe in Delhi: It was not me! We left the hotel at 6:15 to visit a Rotary Club and at 7:45 we still had not found it! |
