25th October 2007 - Freedom Day - the day the Hull Freedom Trail leaves Hull to travel 4,500 miles to Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The Rotary vehicle started it's day in Princes Quay surrounded partnering organisations - Wilberforce Women (of the bras!); Jean Harford with her fair trade Christmas Decorations and David Murden from and-albert Foundation. At lunch time the trailblazers joined them selling the last of their Freedom jewellery and homemade buns. And there were Rotarians everywhere all day from the Central Atrium of Princes Quay to Victoria Square. Over 14 clubs and 50 Rotarians were integral in the co-ordination of the whole day. It was a day of celebration for Rotary District 1270 - the fruition of a year long project which at times had been significantly challenging. The other four vehicles began arriving in Victoria Square from about 1.15pm - the Rotary vehicle was last in at 5.15pm as shown in the photograph. As you can see our District Editor had flags flying from everywhere - note the number plate! |

On the day of the Hull Freedom Trail leaves Hull, Rachel Wilberforce great great great Granddaughter of the famous abolitionist William Wilberforce sent this message.
"The bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade is a time to remember the past - all those that were enslaved and whom lost their lives, and those whom worked tirelessly to bring an end to the slave trade, as well as a time to focus on the present and look to the future. Today at least 12 million men, women and children worldwide are forced to work through the threat or use of violence. They are denied freedom, de-humanised and treated as property to be bought and sold. Even though slavery is illegal under international law, no region is free from this abuse and forms of slavery are found in most countries. The campaigners of 200 years ago, including my thrice great-grandfather William Wilberforce, and Thomas Clarkson and Granville Sharp amongst many others, fought for the abolition of slavery, as did many slaves whom fought for their own freedom. Today, I believe we each have a responsibility to make a difference, by raising awareness about the realities of modern slavery and continuing to campaign for its end. I wish the Hull Freedom Trail and Rotary International team all the best with their humanitarian trip to Sierra Leone" |

Today has been the day for all those last minute preparations.
Final meetings were held with Hull Events Team and Princes Quay for the send off details. Numerous telephone calls with the team as the BBC and Helen Philpot confirmed the final requirements for the "on stage interviews" and live broadcasts. Meanwhile vehicle and people logistics challenged. At the time of writing this (midnight) the jerry cans still need filling with petrol and the spare wheel is where??? |
