Call My Bluff Wine-Tasting
Wednesday, 11 February 2009

Wine tasting? On Friday 6th February members and friends of the Rotary Club of Hull Paragon gathered in Cottingham for an evening of fun, fellowship and fooling.

A panel of three, all unused to both wine and the finer points of deception, each tried to convince the audience that their description of the wine being sampled was correct.

These descriptions were heard in an atmosphere entirely suited to their nature … lean and tart… peppery … finesse …fresh, fruity and young (and this was just the panel).

After all the wines had been sampled three of the seven teams were tied on five correct answers out of six. Including an auction of a Rotary watch kindly donated by one of the members and a raffle of goods provided by the rest, a total of £411 was raised for Hull & East Riding Institute for the Blind.

Rolf & Mr YeungFollowing a  recent visit to the Landings Restaurant with Geoff Peterson and Rolf Sperr to celebrate Mr Yeung’s MBE. I was able to bring to the attention of Eddie Lee, president of the Chinese Association our involvement with Life Straws. He showed it to the rest of his members and we are promised some input by the Chinese as they were recipients of substantial Lifestraw update aid earlier in the year.

Building on top of a superb International Students Evening we now have contacts in China Taiwan Poland India and Indonesia.Professor Daniel Khan O.B.E. visited our display and told the Leader of the Students Union this is something he wants the Institute to be involved in.  Recent donations; This month from out of our Lifestraw fund we have donated £300 to Shelterbox & £300 to life box to pay for Lifestraws that get sent in the boxes. Ravendale School did us proud raising £172.20 for the cause. More cheques will be leaving shortly as soon as the treasurer gets back with the cheque book?

Many thanks to all the Rotarians that have helped to get this project up and running , in particular my small but very effective committee , Ivor, Geoff P, Keith and Rolf.

Hull & East Riding Schools compete at Public Speaking - Youth Speaks
Written by Freya Cross (District PRO)
Monday, 09 February 2009

On Wednesday, 11th February teams of students from Hull and East Riding Schools will compete in the first round of the Rotary National Youth Speaks Competition.  This is an annual competition which has been organised by the local Hull and East Riding Rotary Clubs for over ten years and in 2002 Hornsea were the national competition winners.

Teams can be submitted for two categories – Intermediate (11-13 years) and Senior (14-17 years).  Each team comprises a Chairperson, the Speaker and a Proposer for the Vote of Thanks.  Overall each team takes the stage for a maximum of 15 minutes.

These year’s teams have already submitted their topics with range from “A viewpoint on Animal testing” to “Has female emancipation led to the enslavement of men”, and “make do and mend” to “why we should withdraw from the EU”

Last year’s winners in both categories were for the first time South Holderness.  Their teacher Angela Lowery said  “The students gain much more than winning an accolade.  They gain self esteem, speaking and listening skills”   Monetary prizes and trophies sponsored by the Rotary Clubs are awarded to the successful teams.  The winning team then goes on to compete in the next round against other schools in this Rotary District.

Janet Brumby, Senior Team manager for Young Enterprise enjoys working in partnership with the local Rotary clubs and has been involved in their Youth Speaks Annual public speaking competition for the last few years, both as a volunteer committee member and a judge.

Janet commented ‘’The working partnership between Young Enterprise and The Rotary club demonstrates perfectly how both organizations share a common aim, which is to help and inspire young people to reach their full potential. It’s such a competitive market place in the real world when it comes to business and employment and we feel very strongly that well prepared, confident young candidates are what Universities and employers are looking for.’’
