Rotary Stroke and Health Awareness Day The Rotary Club of Doncaster St Leger again partnered the Doncaster Primary Care Trust and the Stroke Association in carrying out free blood pressure checks in prominent Doncaster locations on ‘Rotary Stroke and Health Awareness Day’ at the end of April. This national event is in its sixth year and was again highly successful locally with some 630 checks taking place – with some urgent referrals being made as a consequence of the checks. During the testing in Doncaster 137 people were referred to their GPs, some 22%, including 18 urgent referrals. There is no doubt that blood pressure testing can save lives. Every five minutes someone in the UK has a stroke and many thousands of people are completely unaware of their high blood pressure.
High blood pressure can be reduced through medication and controlled by changes in diet and lifestyle. |

Presentation of Award to Epworth & Isle of Axholme Rotary Club for Contribution to the Community |

Despite a very wet Bank Holiday Monday May 28th members of Epworth and Isle Rotary Club turned out with the infamous Teddy Bears for a stand at Wesley Day to mark the TriCentennial of Charles Wesley's Birth. Rotarians were involved with marshalling the procession and naming teddies on the Rotary stand. The Epworth and Isle of Axholme Army Cadets ( The President's project for 2006-2007 ) were in full kit to assist with numerous tasks. A lovely surprise was when Brigg and Goole M.P. Ian Cawsey came over to the stand and presented the Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club with the Fairclough Homes Trophy for "Contribution to The Community" and told us the decision had been unanimous that we should win this for our work in Epworth and on the Isle of Axholme. Needless to say spirits lifted and the enclosed photographs show our great honour to receive this so early in the Club's life. (Tricia Barthorpe) |

Lollipop people, Bryan Broome and Janet Wilkinson, were awarded Rotary civic citations for their exceptional work in the community by Rotarian Peter Castle at morning assembly at Kirkella Primary School. The Headmistress, in addressing the school, said that they were part of the extended family of the school, always having smiles on their faces, in every type of weather, and essential for keeping the children safe on the roads. Peter added that they did a good job for the motorists too. Peter thanked the children for their work in filling shoeboxes and aquaboxes for the less fortunate in other parts of the world and told them about the work of Rotary in the local community. He then made the presentations to the two, who were obviously very well loved by the children. |
