Stand opens for businessRotary Flags were visible from most of the showground which was extremely important as the primary information and lost property point in the show.

But this was only part of the stand's activities..  On the second anniversary of the 2007 floods, Rotary D1270 was proud to announce that over £750,000 has been given to local communities that suffered.  The projects supported had been those that were sustainable and particularly geared towards the young people who were affected by the floods.

Representatives from the RC of Cleethorpes were promoting lifestraw and shelterbox.  However, they are not limiting themselves to promoting on the Rotary stand.  They took themselves off to the schools section and in the second photo you can see Keith and Geoff demonstrating Lifestraw to Trent Valley School.  Pupils had previously been to the stand.Lifestraw goes to school

Two local projects were also being profiled this year.  Lincs with India and The Nepal Trust both of which are well supported by the Rc's of Lincoln Colonia and Alford & Mablethorpe.  Both these projects that focus on working with young children in remote areas where education is not readily available.

The opening

On Friday, 12th June Hull Kingston Rovers and Rugby League Legend, Roger Millward MBE officially opened The Rotary Youth Centre at Craven Park - a project that demonstrates the true value of partnership - Hull KR donated the area under the East stand in which the centre is located whilst Rotary donated £115,000 from the RIBI Flood Relief Fund.  The Hull KR Education and Sport Trust will be responsible for the day to day operations now that the centre is open.

Rotary's flood relief fund was set up as a direct response to the June 2007 floods which devastated many areas of District 1270.  To date over £640,866 was given to projects within the District.  The donation towards this project is the largest single payment granted by the Committee.

Allan Jagger who was RIBI President at the time of the floods visited Hull to meet with key individuals and what help was needed.  Allan states “I witnessed at first hand the devastation caused by the extensive flooding in June 2007.  Rotarians were quick to assist the emergency service in helping those affected.  Since then over £1.25 million has been raised by Rotary, every penny spent in establishing sustainable projects for communities here in Yorkshire and around the UK.

Paperchain links Humber Bridge Towers for Lifestraws
Written by RC Barton Upon Humber
Monday, 08 June 2009

Paperchain across the Humber BridgeOn Saturday, 6th June, members of the Barton Youth Centre braved the winds to link the two Humber Bridge Towers with a long paper chain to raise funds to send Rotary Lifestraws to a remote area in Colombia.

The members of the youth club wanted to thank the Rotary Club of Barton Upon Humber for their trip to Eden Camp which could not have taken place without their financial support.

Project Youth Worker, Pat Sutch explained “Barton Rotary Club has always helped the Barton Youth Centre by giving money for special events and trips that we have done.  Every year we do something for charity so this year we thought we would return the favour and help to do something for them”  Members of the Rotary Club of Barton Upon Humber visited the Youth Club to talk about Lifestraws and how they help to save the lives of people in areas where there is little or no clean drinking water.  They were inspired by the fact that many of those who die are children and wanted to help.
