Internet Explorer 7 logo Some of our visitors have commented that they are experiencing problems accessing this site, both on the public side and in the private area.

Most users reporting the problem have either an ISP-provided or otherwise customised version of Internet Explorer v6.  You can find out what version you are running by clicking Help, About... in Internet Explorer.

One possible remedy is to upgrade to Internet Explorer v7 which is now available from http://www.microsoft.com/ie/.  Please note that we do not offer support for this product but support is available from http://support.microsoft.com.

Users (including the District Editor!) who have upgraded to Internet Explorer v7 have reported that their problems are no longer apparent.

Life Straws - Saving Lives
Written by Stuart Leyland (Barton)
Wednesday, 11 October 2006
Mombasa childrenA SIMPLE tool which enables people to drink water from unclean sources is being distributed to children across East Africa thanks to a local charity bid.  It is a straw with filters. It is robust – the only maintenance is to blow rather than suck, and costs just £2.50. It comes attached to a string so can be worn round the neck. Barton-on-Humber Rotary Club, along with other Rotary Clubs and organisations in the area, has adopted the Life Straw cause. The Life Straw is a personal mobile water purification tool. The user sucks water though it and as water is drawn it passes through a number of filters.

By this filtration process all particles above 15 microns are removed and water borne diseases including cholera, dysentery, typhoid and guinea worm are eliminated.

Typically it provides up to four years drinkable water for a child and half this for an adult.

“Big Rotary Phone Drop-in”
Written by David Westwood (Hull)
Saturday, 07 October 2006

FortWilliamIt is proposed that District 1270 supports the And Albert Foundation in its work by gathering, and encouraging others to gather old mobile phones, which can be recycled instead of sent to land-fill and the money received sent directly to help with these projects.

The And Albert Foundation, based in East Yorkshire, is a registered charity (number 1072068) and an established NGO which has trained people and leaders in a group of villages along "The Old Slave Routes" in rural Africa that led from Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and down to the Atlantic coast slave forts. In each of the locations, And Albert has already begun a programme of activities to benefit the whole community. These include the provision of clean water, the sales of their handicrafts and now a strategy of growing and planting indigenous species of trees, shrubs and plants to create a healthier environment as well as economic development.

President of RC Hull, David Westwood represents Rotary on the organising committee in Hull of Wilberforce 2007, to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the first Act of Parliament abolishing the slave trade. This project will be taken to the Wilberforce Committee to consider adoption as part of their programme of events and activities as it is so closely connected with the slave routes. If adopted, this will ensure wide publicity and encourage further public support.
