R C Doncaster - Rotary Mace.  We are seeking help regarding the disposal of a Rotary Mace.  This was purchased from Toye Kenning Spencer in London nine years ago at a cost of £2,300 including VAT.  We have spoken to Toye Kenning Spencer but they do not deal in second-hand items.  The Mace has never been used and is stored in a presentation box.  As the Mace has never been used and unlikely to be used in the future we would like to sell or dispose of this item one way or the other.  If anybody is interested or has any thoughts or ideas about finding a good home for the Rotary Mace, please contact Andrew Goffin (Past President Rotary Club of Doncaster).

Conference Report Sunday 1st October
Written by Malcolm Webb (Assistant District Editor)
Sunday, 01 October 2006

The second day of the conference proved equally as inspiring and entertaining as the first.Beginning with Thought for the Day, DAG Mohammad Ali (Rotary Club of Brigg) read “Life on the Train”.  This was in place of the usual religious-type service and proved immensely popular and tear-jerking.RIBI representative this year was the RIBI Secretary Robin Freeman (Rotary Club of Henley in Arden) who brought greetings from RIBI President Peter Offer and gave us information about the RIBI Conference in Bournemouth.  He highlighted the challenges which face Rotary in the future – falling membership, increasing average age, lack of awareness of Rotary amongst the public at large -- and challenged us to overcome the backslide and to put Rotary at the forefront of the public image.

Timothy Bentinck was the keynote speaker for the Sunday, otherwise known as David Archer from BBC Radio’s series “The Archers” or the Earl of Portland.  He was there to represent The Institute of Cancer Research and we all expected to see the Cancer Research DVD as we had been primed in advance that this would be the mainstay of his talk.  How wrong we were – and how pleasantly surprised.  He spoke about his life in acting and the varied roles he had played and the various roles he had failed to get.

Saturday, 30 September 2006

David Shepherd

The return to Scarborough for District 1270’s annual conference has proved to be very popular so much so attendance was the highest recorded for several years.

The conference began with the RC Goole President, Robert Haigh, presenting of a new sash for the new District Sergeant at Arms, Graham Owen.

District Governor Rolf had chosen AfricDelegatesa to be the theme of his conference.

Representatives of three Rotary projects – Freeplay Radios, Shelterbox and the Wheelchair Foundation, gave presentations with updates on how much both had achieved to date. Both had stands in the Hall of Friendship and in the mid morning coffee break the Wheelchair Foundation had received enough funds to purchase 17 wheelchairs!
